Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.Ephesians 5:18-20 (ESV)
Our singing is to be fueled by the Holy Spirit, shaped by a continuous intake of God’s Word. Singing unites God’s people as our faith is strengthened and our love for one another increases. It integrates the heart and the head, going beyond mere emotionalism to gain a larger view of God and to reach out to Him with our heart’s affections in response to all that He has done for us.
