The Gospel of Mark

Jesus’ Family

Our salvation comes by faith in Christ alone, but the validating mark of the believer is a life of increasing obedience to the word of God. It is not enough to merely listen to the teachings of Christ. We must obey His Word as revealed in Scripture confessing our sins when needed. Jesus said that His redeemed, eternal family members are those who listen to and obey His teachings.

Jacob, Jacob

“Jacob, Jacob.” God spoke with affection to Jacob in a moment of deep spiritual significance and tells Jacob not to fear as he prepares to enter the land of Egypt. God reassures Jacob that He will keep His promises and prove His faithfulness. Like Jacob, we need a faithful God and God is faithful. Our response must be to embrace God’s promises and act in obedience.

Abraham, Abraham

God is always worthy of our trust and obedience, even when His dealings with us are baffling from our perspective. Abraham believed the promises of God in spite of the perplexity of God’s command to sacrifice his son, Isaac. The Lord responded to the obedience of Abraham by calling out “Abraham, Abraham,” and providing a substitute sacrifice. Like Abraham, let us be reminded that no one ever trusted God in vain.

Baptism

Why is baptism important? Baptism is a command of Jesus, an essential part of His great commission to the disciples in Matthew 28:18-10 (above). It is also a visible picture of our faith in the triune God (Matthew 28:19), of our salvation experience (Romans 6:3-4), and of our desire to live faithfully for Christ. Finally, baptism is an act of worship (Acts 8:36-39).

Ordinary People, Extraordinary Things

Acts 8 describes Philip’s encounter with an Ethiopian on a desert road. Philip was an “ordinary guy,” content to stay in the background, yet he was used by God to share the good news of Jesus to a man who later returned to his corner of the earth to impact others. We can be used in similar ways if we will obey the prompting of the Holy Spirit that is proactively entering the lives of others and speak the good news of Jesus.
