The Spirit’s Good Purpose

The Spirit’s Good Purpose

Yesterday at our baptism service at Jordan Lake, I had planned to talk for a few minutes about how God saves us by his grace. My plan was to remind us that Ephesians 2:8-9 says we have no reason to boast because God’s saving of us is totally a grace gift. Before I was to speak and while we were singing, Galatians 6:14 suddenly flooded my thoughts. This verse says, “May I never boast except in the cross of Christ …” Here’s the thought that settled in my thinking: “We are at this baptism service to boast in the one reality that brings an end to all other boasting – the cross.” So when I stood to speak, I talked about boasting in the cross as our only legitimate boast. Later that day it occurred to me that perhaps the Holy Spirit created this thought in my mind because, by means of meditation, these two verses were already in my heart. It was a humbling experience and made me truly grateful. God’s word worked into our hearts by means of meditation and memorization is at the ready for the Spirit’s good purposes.
