I, II Timothy, and Titus are referred to as the Pastoral Letters because they were written to two men whom Paul had left in charge of the church in Ephesus (Timothy) and on Crete (Titus). Paul is writing to encourage them to remain faithful to the gospel message that Paul had so carefully presented to their churches. In fact, the Greek word for “faithful” is used seventeen times in these three letters. The message of these letters is that the gospel leads to practical, visible change in the lives of those who believe it. There is an inseparable link between faith and practice, belief and behavior. Timothy and Titus are to defend sound doctrine (especially in the face of false teachers) and to maintain discipline within the church. Paul tells us that he is writing “so that … you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.” (I Timothy 3:14, 15)

What does it mean to live out the Gospel in everyday life? How should we expect the Gospel to change our hearts, our communities, and how we live in this world? We will be utilizing Tim Keller’s “Gospel in Life: Grace Changes Everything” to generate discussions on the world we live in, living from the heart, identifying and displacing modern idols, community building practices, cultivating redemptive relationships, and living out the Gospel in this world in light of eternity.
